Closing out Black History Month with a newly transitioned ancestor Faith Ringgold was born in 1930 on the heels of the Harlem Renisance. She was deeply influenced by the explosion of Black artistic, literary, and cultural expression that surrounded her in her formative years. Growing up in Harlem, she witnessed firsthand the power of art as a tool for storytelling, activism, and cultural preservation, a theme that remained central to her work throughout her career. A lifelong arts educator and activist, Ringgold carved out space in the New York art scene, challenging exclusionary institutions and earning her place in galleries and museums. While primarily a painter, she became widely known for her story quilts, a tradition deeply rooted in African American folk art. At a time when quilting was undervalued and had never been exhibited in a major New York museum, Ringgold’s work shattered boundaries, ensuring her narrative was seen, heard, and honored. Faith Ringgold embodied the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance, proving that art is not just a reflection of the times—it is a catalyst for change. Her influence continues to inspire generations of artists, educators, and changemakers. She is a wonderful figure to lead us into women’s history month.

Throughout BHM month we’ve been learning about a few of the amazing contemporary African American Artists shaping the art world. From storytelling to activism, these visionary artists continue to redefine contemporary art, reclaim narratives, and inspire future generations. They are making a lasting impact through their bold creativity and cultural expressions. 🎨 Hank Willis Thomas challenges visual culture with thought-provoking photography, sculpture, and public installations that explore race, identity, and consumerism. 🎨 Betye Saar, a legend in assemblage art, transforms found objects into powerful critiques of history, race, and spirituality, reclaiming Black narratives with an ancestral lens. 🎨Yvette Simon Leigh reimagines traditional African sculptural forms to highlight Black womanhood, power, and ancestral connection in striking ceramic works. 🎨Woodrow Nash creates powerful ceramic sculptures that honor African heritage, history, and spirituality. His work reclaims the Black body as a symbol of resilience, beauty, and cultural pride, challenging dominant narratives and celebrating the depth of the African diaspora. 🎨 Kadir Nelson captures Black excellence, history, and resilience in stunningly detailed paintings and illustrations that appear in books, murals, and magazine covers. 🎨 Nastassja Swift is a sculptural fiber artist whose larger-than-life figurative works—whether whole or fragmented—explore themes of geographical histories, ancestry, ritual practices, and community. 🎨Patrick Dougher infuses his art with deep spirituality, creating portraits and murals that celebrate Black culture, music, and the richness of African traditions. 🎨 Nick Cave is known for his elaborate Soundsuits—wearable sculptures that combine performance, dance, and mixed media to challenge perceptions of race and identity. They still ring true today in 2025, as it did then, and as it did in 1971 when Gil Scott-Heron coined the phrase in his poem, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”, calling listeners to be active, rather than remain passive observers. In last Sunday’s Super Bowl half time show Kendrick Lamar flipped the phrase stating, “The revolution is about to be televised”. calling out that now is the right time.
